Carbon Reduction
Programme

Dangote Group is committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions across Scope 1, 2 and 3 in alignment with the Paris Agreement. Our cement operations — the Group's largest emitting sector — are transitioning to alternative fuels and clinker-factor reduction to achieve a 30% emissions intensity improvement by 2030.

The Dangote Refinery, designed to IFC Performance Standards, incorporates sulphur recovery units, flare gas minimisation systems and energy efficiency measures that reduce emissions compared to the regional petroleum supply it displaces.

The Dangote Fertiliser plant produces urea using natural gas — a lower-carbon feedstock than coal-based alternatives — and is evaluating green hydrogen pathways for long-term decarbonisation.

Alternative Fuels
Replacing coal with municipal waste and biomass in cement kilns to reduce CO₂ intensity per tonne of clinker produced.
Clinker Factor Reduction
Increasing use of supplementary cementitious materials (fly ash, GGBS, limestone) in blended cement products.
Energy Efficiency
ISO 50001 energy management systems targeting 15% thermal and electrical energy intensity reduction by 2028.
Renewable Integration
Solar-assisted power at smaller facilities; feasibility studies for utility-scale renewables at major plants.
GHG Reporting
Annual Scope 1 & 2 inventory per GHG Protocol; third-party verification from FY 2024 onwards.
Water Management

Water Stewardship

Closed-loop Systems

Cement plants operate closed-loop cooling water circuits to eliminate freshwater discharge and recover process water for reuse in grinding operations.

Wastewater Treatment

Industrial effluent at refinery and fertiliser facilities is treated to Nigeria's DPR standards and FEPA guidelines before any controlled discharge.

Water-scarce Operations

Facilities in water-stressed basins (Northern Nigeria, Ethiopia, Senegal) have site-specific water management plans reviewed annually against rainfall data.

Consumption Monitoring

Real-time metering at all major extraction points; monthly water intensity ratios (m³ per tonne of product) reported to Group HSSE.

Community Impact

Water sourcing agreements include provisions to avoid competing with local communities; infrastructure investment in communal water access near major plants.

2030 Water Target

Reduce absolute water consumption intensity by 40% versus 2020 baseline; achieve water-neutral status at two flagship facilities by 2028.

Circular Economy

Waste Minimisation

Cement Kiln Co-processing

Used tyres, spent solvents and industrial waste co-processed as alternative fuels in cement kilns — diverting material from landfill while displacing fossil fuels.

Fly Ash Utilisation

Coal combustion residues from power generation incorporated into blended cement products, reducing both waste disposal and clinker production requirements.

Plastic Waste

Dangote Packaging's polypropylene recovery programme recycles post-industrial offcuts back into the production process, targeting 95% material efficiency.

Construction Waste

Project and maintenance waste at all Group facilities managed under site waste management plans with contractor-binding zero-landfill targets for hazardous materials.

Food-grade Waste

Flour mills and sugar operations donate off-spec product to partner food banks and livestock feed manufacturers, achieving near-zero food waste.

E-waste & Batteries

Group-wide e-waste and battery collection programme with certified recyclers in Nigeria, reducing informal disposal of IT equipment and industrial batteries.

Nature & Land

Biodiversity
Commitments

All new Dangote Group projects undergo Environmental and Social Impact Assessments (ESIAs) that include biodiversity baseline surveys, habitat impact assessments and mitigation hierarchy analysis — aligned with IFC Performance Standard 6 and the Mitigation Hierarchy (avoid → minimise → restore → offset).

The Group has adopted a "No Net Loss" biodiversity policy for all developments in Biodiversity Significant Areas, with site-level biodiversity management plans for existing operations adjacent to protected areas or critical habitats.

Biodiversity Actions
ESIA for all greenfield and major expansion projects
Vegetation surveys before any land clearance
Topsoil preservation and reuse in rehabilitation
Progressive mine rehabilitation at limestone quarries
Native species replanting — 500,000 trees planted 2020–2025
Wildlife corridor preservation at Obajana and Ibese quarries
Marine biodiversity monitoring at Lekki refinery jetty
Annual biodiversity audit by independent ecologists
